The Effect of Concept Map on Academic Achievement in Thinking and Media Literacy Course (A Mixed Method)

Abstract
Introduction:The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of concept map-based education on academic progress in thinking and media literacy in the second year of high school.

Research Methodology:The design of this research was a combination of an experimental nest type and research method in the quasi-experimental quantitative part,with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group and in the qualitative part, descriptive phenomenology. The statistical community of the quantitative part is male students. They were in the second year of high school in district one of Shiraz city, who were studying in the 10th grade in the academic year of 1998-99. Using the purposeful sampling method,3classrooms (a concept map presentation class, a concept map presentation and construction class,and a control class) were selected.They were randomly selected.In the qualitative part,15students from the two experimental groups were selected as samples in a purposeful way. Discovering the level of students' perception and experience before, during and after the implementation,semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires were used.The analysis method of the quantitative part was analysis of covariance and the analysis method of the qualitative part was thematic analysis.

Findings: The findings of the present study show that providing education based on concept maps has a positive effect on increasing students' academic progress scores in the subject of thinking and media literacy.

Discussion and conclusion:The results of the quantitative part showed that the students' learning level has increased significantly compared to the control group.In the qualitative part, it was found that the students of the experimental group from the beginning to the end of the training in using and creating conceptual maps, from a higher level of understanding and experience.According to the final results, the use of education based on concept maps will increase the amount of students' learning compared to the traditional method.
